20 Years of work by Joyce Melander-Dayton

A mid-career retrospective exhibition featuring 25 years of works by the renowned Sant-Fe basted artist Joeyce Melander Dayton will open at the Rymer Gallery on April 3,2010 and will remain on view through April 24. Melander-Dayton creates contemporary textile works that pull from her childhood experiences in Asia, her love of music, aand the workaday elements of her life.
Melander-Dayton began her career as a painter; her works, representational and hyper-realistic,were juxtaposed with strips of color and repetition. Moving on from this series of work, Melander-Dayton incorporated beadwork, embroidery, and waeving into her works, eventually leaving the confines of the canvas to create wall and table-top installations. As art writer, Hilaries M.Sheets writes in the exhibition catalogue, "Melander-Dayton has found tremendous freedom in reinventing traditional crafts in a contemporary context - creating these abstract forms that fluctuate between suggestions of macro and micro, complexity and simplicity."
